Lawn Pests

Lawn can be damaged by various insects and grubs throughout the year . Although this damage can be somewhat irregular, infestation varies from district to district and often a major problem in one area may be a minor problem in another area. If lawn presentation is important to you then some form of control is necessary. Pest control can be either chemical or organic. There are pros and cons to both methods, however, you will generally find the chemicals work faster than any form of organic control.

Lawn Pest Types

Before resorting to any control measure you should always properly identify a lawn pest. This will save you time and money wasted on mismatched products. Identification is made easier if you are aware of the signs to look for. Often, damage is visible obvious but sometimes you need to look a little closer to find the problem.

Some form of beetle grub will be prevalent in most areas. The grub from the common lawn beetle feeds on roots causing yellow patches and stunted lawn growth. Considerable damage may occur as the grubs are literally eating the foundation away from the lawn. As a result the lawn can be pulled out in large clups revealing bare soil. Often, by digging only a few inches you will find the culprit in the form of a white curl grub. Adult beetles on the other hand feed on foliage but do not cause so much damage. The key therefore is to prevent the beetle getting to the larvae stage. There are several varieties of lawn damaging beetles. Often the damage they cause is similar but not evident until heat stress begins and the damaged roots fail to supply enough water to the leaves.
