Lawn Fertilizing

Why Fertilize?

Lawns grow on soil that requires fertility maintenance. In general, soils are naturally made up of finely divided rocks, minerals and finely divided matter.Sand, silt, clay & organic matter help provide structure, aeration and favourable water intake rates, but they seldom maintain adequate healthy lawn growth.

How often?

Regular fertilizing is one of the key factors in creating a healthy and lush green lawn but how often do we need to fertilise a lawn to keep it strong & health?

There are several factores that determine when a lawn should be fertilized. Here is a list of some of the main ones:

  • Climate
  • Lawn Type
  • Brand of Fertiliser
  • Health of Lawn
  • Soil Composition

Lawns are a large plant and require specific amounts and types of nutients on a frequent basis. Nutrition is one of the key elements in the life of a lawn. Regular fertilising is the secret to keeping a lawn healthy and green all year round.

The general rule of thumb is that lawns should be fertilised about every 8 weeks. Although the growth rate declines throughout the cooler months it is important to maintain the nutrient levels to ensure good deep root growth and resistence to certain types of pests and diseases. When a lawn shows visible signs of colour loss and deterioration it generally means low nutrient levels.

If an 8 weekly fertilizer program is not possible then the start of spring would be the next best option. With the upcoming warmer months it is vitally important to nurture  and establish a healthy root system to protect your lawn from a hot summer.
